NIGERIA is 51 and still counting....

# Headlines........
Massive security, low-key events as nation clocks 51
The country witnessed an unprecedented security as it celebrated a moderate and low-key 51st independence anniversary.
Apparently responding to the threats of bomb attacks by the Movement for the Emancipation of Niger Delta and the past bomb explosions by the fundamentalist Boko Haram sect, security was tightened up across the states, including the Federal Capital Territory during the celebrations......#punch

Senate delays meeting security chiefs
Four months after the senate decided to invite heads of security agencies to discuss the spate of bombings
in the country, the upper chamber has yet to meet with the security chiefs.
The leadership of the Senate had concluded plans to summon the security chiefs to find ways of fast-tracking the fight against terrorist attacks in the country.
Although the decision to invite the heads of the security agencies was taken on June 28, 2011,
the Senate has not been able to put its acts together to meet with the agencies.....#punch

Ex-minister Ihenacho opens up

As the immediate past Minister of Interior, what is the effect of the situation to the image of the country?
I feel bad just like every Nigerian.

I feel very bad that we have this ugly development. The cause is really a development that
cannot help the image of any country. Every right thinking Nigerian, whether as a Minister or an ordinary person really should feel bad that these things are happening. Well, I am no longer the Minister of Interior. If I were still the Minister of Interior, I would know that this is my job and I would have to look at all available measures including persuasive and coercive to try and make sure that the level of violence is absolutely minimized and all together eliminated.
So, to that extent, I feel bad that this thing is ongoing. I honestly hope and wish that we could find the right formula for addressing these issues both politically and otherwise. But certainly to allow that these things would continue unabated is not acceptable. Buildings are blown up, lives are lost; these things are certainly not what any Nigerian could be proud of.
What were your greatest challenges as a Minister of Interior?
There are lots of challenges that I encountered and most of it is actually rebuilding the capability of the ministry itself. You know that the ministry has evolved overtime. There was a time when the ministry encompassed control of the Police, Customs, Immigration, Civil Defence, Fire service, Prison service but over the years, there have been administrative changes which basically saw to the removal of the key elements of coercive power. The Police for instance has moved on to become a separate ministry.

He announced that, “already, we are beginning to do things differently. I believe that integrity, honour, patriotism, selfless service and fear of God, must be the hallmarks of leadership at all levels. The President disclosed that his government has put in place a new and reinvigorated national security strategy, to combat the threat to safety, noting that, “ no matter what I do as your President and no matter what we do as your elected leaders, at all levels, the peace and security of our nation rest also on our collective efforts as citizens, in our various communities.

my Poli-jist .....
i woke up  looking to celebrate the independence day with my friends, moving from one hot spot in the federal capital territory to another...thinking i could go show off my great partisan abs at the pool, which i created with my imagination...
to my great surprise, my all night tweets and broadcast was all a dream...i then asked myself..Oladapo, what are you  going to do today? then i answered myself saying what ever comes my way...like an open minded Nigerian who creates merry even in the tightest of event or outcome of a disastrous war fair. i had my mind on so many things that din't come to past because of the scare in Abuja...BOKO this, MEND that..blah blah...pfffffff....
so i taught of not making any breakfast for myself..headed straight to my fountain of knowledge..not ondo state but my papa's house..that old boy knows how to sweat a conversation... so i was ready for my mama's morning meal..i was just going to pretend like it meant nothing to me..the feeling of been their child rocked my tummy after how many years of been Independent as a bachelor....then came the knock, the usual embrace and the nose job to know if the pots are busy...
coffee was been served and i was on time...then he looked at me and said" young man what have you turned Nigeria into"?....i just opened my arms and sipped ma coffee..like i have no clue..of course i don't..so i told him to cut the chase, am not a mouse...here is my papa's story about Nigeria....
when i was working with the ministry of works way back...i stand to be confronted by anyone form the 60's and 70's, that our salaries was deducted to help some south African countries facilitate their independence ..likes of Angola, Namibia even South Africa...then African nations looked up to Nigeria to help administrate the affairs of the country...many Africans strive hard to get a visa to come to Nigeria because it was the great land of opportunities..where people get made... The land where your dreams never sleeps again.. now that said Nigeria is a country where many of its younger generation now fight to divide...thinking, we are better off separated than been together and stronger than any nation..that joyful place now find peace in the memories of the past and hope to rebuild that memory in the future...
what is wrong with the present? why does the north believe it can survive with all its agricultural produce..while the south south hope to build on crude oil without eating...or the west believing in its knowledge of becoming a better place where their is no resources to explore...together we still stand..together we will remain...i remember he said...the now power drunk Robert mugabe came to inspect our port..so as to have an idea of how an international port authority should be administrated ...he forgot so soon that this said nigeria helped him become president...he sipped his coffee with pain in his lungs...he called my name again OLADAPO, south africa should remember when nigeria was the only African nation, resourceful enough to interfare in its independence negociation..now that same south Africa claims to be the gaint of Africa...well its all your fault..younger generation knows nothing about peace and intergrity....you might have to meet him to hear the rest of the jist ..he stressed, tell your friends and who ever cares to listen that all the world powers all went through the same route to succeed..Roman wasn't built in a day...America had its own terrible differences..remember America was famous for racisim against black skinned human beings..they called them slaves..now they have a black president...that is aftter so many years of fights, negociations, dialog and believe that saw a vsion come to past..same as USSR..now they all live peacefully sadly for their separation..
Nigeria will not seperate, should not seperate... stand together and rise up to claim your birth right as Africa's best...now leave my house... HAPPY INDEPENDENCE DAY TO MY NIGERIA

Emotions were high at High Court Number 10, Maiduguri, Borno State, northeast Nigeria today when Rebecca Emmanuel who was accused of poisoning her 9-year old son, Ishaya Emmanuel sometime in 2008 was sentenced to death by hanging.

Rebecca, mother of four who was earlier granted bail by the court and had consistently appeared at the court during her trial, could not get the sympathy of the trial judge Justice Pirogai Ngada who, while delivering her judgement said: “I agree that she has four children and has never absconded from bail but Section 221 of the law under which she is convicted is a mandatory provision of culpable homicide punishable by death. I wish I can temper justice with mercy. But I can’t because she is hereby sentenced to death by hanging.”
On 20 January, 2008 Rebecca Emmanuel lured her son, Ishaya Emmanuel to a bush where she gave him a Maltina drink laced with poison which led to Ishaya’s death after which the convict burnt the corpse.
In one of her confessional statements during the trial, Rebecca had said: “I went to my father’s house and picked my child. We got to a place where I got a poisonous substance at the sum of N20 and matches. I took him to a bush and laced the substance in a bottle of Maltina.
“I made him drink it. After 30 minutes, the boy died and I set him ablaze, so that no one could recognise him and I left for my husband’s house.”
Delivering the judgement, the judge said she was satisfied by the confessional statement made by the accused person.
