OBJ DENIES WRITING SECRET LETTER TO JONATHAN

Former President, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, has denied reports that he wrote to President Goodluck Jonathan, asking him to change heads of some federal agencies if he wanted his transformational agenda to succeed.

He was reacting to a report in a national daily (not THISDAY) that he had written Jonathan requesting that certain people be dropped from their positions to make way for his own (Obasanjo’s) candidates...#Thisday

SULTAN: JOS CRISIS, BOKO HARAM PRODUCT OF POOR LEADERSHIP

Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III, yesterday said the Jos crises and the Boko Haram insurgency were direct products of poor leadership at the governmental level.
“Poor leadership at governmental levels is a major cause of our social tensions today, especially the Jos crises and Boko Haram phenomenon,” he said.

Speaking at Harvard Univer-sity in Boston, Massachusetts, United States, while delivering a lecture titled: “Islam and Peace Building in West Africa”, the sultan said the phenomena could only cease if governments at all levels initiate what he called genuine dialogue to begin healing festering wounds and to bring genuine understanding and reconciliation amongst the entire people of Nigeria...#Thisday

FG UNVEILS PROPOSAL TO PHASE OUT FUEL SUBSIDY
In an apparent move to permanently lay to rest the perennial controversy over the necessity or otherwise of fuel subsidy in the country, the Federal Government has finally come out with a proposal to phase out the policy as from next year.

Indication to this effect was contained in the 2012-2015 Medium Term Fiscal Framework (MTFF) and the Medium Term Expenditure Framework (MTEF) sent to the National Assembly.
The communication from President Goodluck Jonathan that unveiled the MTEF, was read on the floors of both chambers yesterday by Senate President David Mark and Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Aminu Tambuwal.

The Federal Government operates a fuel subsidy scheme with the policy purpose of making petroleum products available while cushioning the effect of their true market prices on the populace...#Thisday

DANGOTE PASTA: NLC SEEKS DIALOGUE OVER SACKED WORKERS
Leaders of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has called for dialogue with management of Dangote Pasta in respect to the former workers of the company who were allegedly disengaged in September last year.
It was gathered that the National Union of Food, Beverage and Tobacco Employees (NUPTE) affiliated to the NLC had lodged a complain to the Congress on alleged victimisation of 200 staff of Dangote Pasta who were locked out in August last year over issues bordering on unionisation.

It is against this background that the NLC had requested a meeting with the management of the company with a view to resolving the issues on ground. The meeting is expected to hold tomorrow at the company’s office in Lagos...#Thisday

DEVT : AMEACHI HARPS ON ECONOMIC LEGISLATION
With about 200 roads under construction in Rivers State, Governor Rotimi Ameachi yesterday urged the National Assembly to approve economic bills forwarded to it by the executive, as such laws were intrumental towards achieving infrastructure revolution in the country.

Speaking at the commencement of a three-day capacity-building retreat for members of the state House of Assembly, at the Tinapa Business and Leisure Resort, Calabar, Cross River State, the governor said no government conscious of development could survive without borrowing.
Ameachi revealed that budgetary provision for capital projects had over the years become inadequate to provide infrastructural facilities considering the increasing cost of governance. He noted that this factor compelled his administration to seek the approval of the state legislature to access loans for roads construction in the state.

He said based on the economic law enacted by the state House of Assembly, the state government was able to obtain a loan of N200 billion, adding that it had  so far been able to access N40 billion at eight per cent interest rate with N5 billion of this already repaid.

“The responsibility of the legislature is enormous. This responsibility is clear in a country that administers by the rule of law. Part of that responsibility is to initiate economic laws that will enable government to run. We sought for a loan of N200 billion but have accessed only N40 billion so far. This money is being used to construct roads in our state...#Thisday

JONATHAN SEEKS UNDP'S ASSISTANCE IN JOB CREATION

President Goodluck Jonathan yesterday called for the involvement of United Nations Development programme (UNDP) in the job creation scheme which his administration was planning.
He said the scheme was targeted at creating young entrepreneurs who would, in turn, employ fellow youths instead of waiting for the Federal Government to create such employments...
Jonathan spoke at the Presidential Villa, Abuja when the UNDP Administrator of programmes, Mrs. Helen Clark, visited him. He said the job creation scheme he planned to adopt was youth-based because young people less than 30 years formed a greater percentage of the population of the country...#Thisday
